In February 2020, Captain Nelson was appointed to the rank of Captain by Sheriff Christopher R. Swanson.  This appointment was a historic moment for the Office of Sheriff and Captain Nelson, as she is the first female in the history of the Office to rise to the rank of Captain.

Captain Nelson has served with the Office of Genesee County Sheriff for the past 18 years, with responsibilities spanning from Paramedic Deputy to Uniformed Services Commander.  Captain Nelson currently oversees all uniformed police services; which includes Courts Division, Road Patrol, Secondary Road Patrol, School Resource, Atlas Township, Fenton Township, Vienna Township, and numerous specialized units.

 Captain Nelson has developed a thorough understanding of all aspects of law enforcement, including expertise in elder abuse, human trafficking, sexual assault, and mobile forensics examination. Captain Nelson has command experience in all Divisions including serving as Lieutenant of Investigative Services, where she was the lead investigator on some of Genesee County’s most audacious crimes of financial exploitation and elder abuse. Additionally, Captain Nelson has served as Detective Sergeant, Paramedic Sergeant, and Paramedic Deputy.
